Movie Date with Captain Phillips

It was “two for the price of one” today at the movies, with my free birthday pass on the movie loyalty card.  With four weeks to use it or lose it, time was running out, and the movie Captain Phillips seemed  interesting.  We were not disappointed, it was action packed all the way.

Still of Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips

The film tells the true story of of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.  The film focuses on the relationship between  Captain Richard Phillips and the Somali pirate captain, Muse, who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target the unarmed ship.  Captain Phillips hands over $30, 000 from the ship’s safe, and urges the pirates to take the cash and go in one of the Alabama’s lifeboats.  But they take the captain hostage, all the time arguing as they each wrestle for power amongst themselves.  The situation gets more and more volatile as chew on their supply of narcotic plants
Tom Hanks played a very credible captain doing his best to save his ship and especially his crew.  With the US Navy and a team of US Navy SEALS coming to the rescue, it was touch and go if the captain would make it out of his ordeal alive.  We can certainly recommend this high octane movie which had us on the edge of our seats.
