From the Valley to the Coast

Another weekend – another rally, that’s how it goes sometimes.  It was a misty kind of morning with low clouds hovering around the hills when we hitched up the van and started our journey to Paekakariki on the Kapiti Coast.

There was a bit work going on along the river, we noticed.   The Hutt River has stop-banks and introduced willow trees planted in populated areas to stop the effects of flooding.   Some of the willows on the water’s edge had been cut right down, and new plantings had been made.  Graders also carry our regular maintenance in the river bank to keep the water flowing freely.

We drove up and over the Hayward’s Hill Road, took a detour through Porirua for some supplies, then along SH1 to our destination at the Paekakariki Holiday Park for the weekend, a total of 55kms.

The camp is looking nice and tidy, and the gardens are in flower.  The red Kaka Beak bush was covered in blossoms and a tub of daffodils tell us that perhaps Spring is not too far away.

It’s been a while since we have last been in this area, and there has been a lot of maintenance work done down at the beach.  A heavy duty sea wall has been built, to safe guard the coast line, incorporating a new walkway.

The camp is just across the road from the beach, so hopefully we will be able to take a beach walk over the weekend.
