Decadent Daytime Dalliance

This retirement business seems too good to be true.  We decided to treat ourselves and go to the movies today, for the princely sum of $8.00 each for seniors.  Tuesday is billed as “Cheap Tuesdays”, so we, together with a bus load of elderly ladies from the local retirement home, arrived at the Ascot Theatre for the 10.00am showing.  The Ascot is one of the new breed of movie houses which has several small theatres instead of one large one, as was the norm on earlier times.  We followed the elderly ladies down the long corridor until we came to Cinema Number 1.

We went to see “Made in Dagenham”.  This film was based on the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant in London.  The minority number of female staff machinists decided to strike after being down graded to unskilled workers.  The film tells the story of their struggle to win, against all odds, the right to equal pay.  The bosses are against them, of course, and it seems that the unions and other workers are too.  Other story lines weave through the film, with enough emotion for me to dab my eyes from time to time.  But don’t worry blokes, Robin didn’t shed a tear at all.

We can thoroughly recommend this film.  So if you want to have a daytime dalliance of your own to be entertained, and learn about how the struggle for Equal Pay started and came to a conclusion in England, pop along to your local cinema sometime.  Hankies are optional.
